LAN Party Lock-In 9th Jan

A good ol’ LAN party!

Yes, it’s about time again to get stuck in to some joyous up-close-and-personal multiplayer chaos fun. If you need an excuse, let’s stress-test these LAN switches!

The Games

Plenty of the old favourites, as well as some more recent games will played on the night. Shooty games, strategy games, party games, co-op games and the like.  Let us know if you want to play anything in particular. Leave a comment or email us at LAN@091labs.com

Equipment

LAN Party etiquette dictates that you bring your own equipment.
We do however have a fully networked and power supplied building, and plenty of spare ethernet cables for anyone who needs them. That said, we would recommend bringing a short patch cable for yourself (like you would use with your home router) to optimize set up time.

Facilities

We have a projector for some console gaming, like your fighting game of choice. (There may also be a second projector on the night!)

Food/Drinks

Pizza? Pizza. Probably. We’ll see if we can arrange a deal with our local pizza shop for the event.
There is coffee in instant, espresso maker and bean form  (beans, grinder & french press) and plenty of sugary snacks available from our tuck shop. We have a fridge for storing food/drink on the night.

New-years-resolutions-guilt-free! All proceeds are used to support 091 Labs, so you can be sure the best Galway Hackerspace will still be here for you when you need it!

Binge on the junkfood from the humble local businesses while you discuss the finer points of your strategies for your next team games, and create the wonderful stories of how it all went wrong, but you still came out on top! Indulge yourself post-christmas with a compact, time-friendly gaming binge.

The Two Shelves

A member here was catching up on the TOG website, and saw this very hackerspace relevant post. It’s about dealing the the accumulation of junk.

The following is originally posted on TOG, Dublins Hackerspace:

Like many hackerspaces, TOG accepts a lot of materials, donations, parts, and junk that Might Come In Useful™… sometimes so much that there’s no room for actual hacking. The problem is so common, there’s even a Hackerspace Design Pattern for it: the Old Hardware Pattern.

For the last year, we’ve been running a version of the two-shelf system, in which items left around the space are put on the shelves for collection or eventual disposal.

Does it work? Kind of. Lost items are reunited with their owners. Unused items inspire new projects. Semi-regular photos let members check the shelves from afar, workspaces are cleared with impunity, and there’s a slow but steady flow of junk out of the space.

And yet, the space is still full of stuff… :D

Thank you tangentmonger for that piece of writing! We’ll certainly be giving something like this a shot sometime soon.

Culture Night 2014 @ 091 Labs: Sugru, Art, Board Gaming & More!

gcn_2014

091 Labs will be taking part in Galway Culture Night  this Friday, September 19th from 5pm until late (or more realistically, 8pm or 9pm)!

Culture Night  is a country-wide event where businesses and organisations open their doors to the public for a night of free events and entertainment. This will be our third year participating and if the last two Culture Nights are anything to go by it’s going to be a heck of a lot of fun!

This year, we’ll be holding a Sugru Build Night in association with tutorials mega-website Instructables. Sugru is a mold-able material that sets to a non-toxic, water-proof, cold and heat resistant silicone rubber overnight, allowing you to make custom grips, shock-absorbing bumpers for fragile items, seal leaky shoes, mend frayed charging cables, make any toy Lego-compatible (and at lest ten times more awesome) and improve almost anything. If you have something that you think you can improve, repair or just mess with, bring it by on thenight and we’ll provide the Sugru! Many, many thanks are owed to Sugru and Instructables for donating the Sugru to us. If you need inspiration, check out Sugru’s own suggestions or the Instructables Sugru tutorials.

As well as Sugru, we will be hosting an exhibition of artwork from Galway Pub Scrawl, Galway’s local social art group. They will also be running a mini-meetup in the Labs for anyone interested in doing some chatting and sketching. Or if you’re more gaming-minded we will have Board Games Club Galway playing some board games, suitable for all skill levels. Expect back-stabbing and cunning strategies!

And on top of all this we will have our members showing off their projects, arcade games, electronics, 3d printing and more.
The city will be absolutely jam-packed with events so get out there and experience what Galway has to offer!
