Our two newest additions to 091 Labs shared their projects with us. Ernestas demoed his web based RTS game currently in development and Kevin told us about his upcoming exhibit at the Galway Arts Centre. Good to see a Joomla enthusiasts monthly meetup has started in Galway. Some of us are going along to the xCake Galway Apps Workshop at GTC tonight. There is also a Galway Python meetup at the Westwood Hotel tonight. Best of luck to those entering this years Google Code Jam with qualifying rounds this Friday and Saturday. Iain MacLaren has confirmed June 11th for TEDxGalway. Admission is free but places are limited to 100 so be sure to register your interest early if you want to attend.

Given recent announcements from Twitter and Facebook it proved very informative and timely. We found the Semantic Microblogging Framework (SMOB) of particular interest. Declan McGrath has posted a good write up of Open Jam over on The Irish Penguin. There are a number of upcoming events worth sharing. Galway Open Coffee is hosting its May 1st meetup in Irelands first ecovillage Cloughjordan. To celebrate the release of Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx) a geeknic is planned for May 2nd in Farmleigh Park. Ignite The West kicks off at The Mill Times Hotel in Westport on May 7th. BizCamp Limerick is being held at the Kemmy Business School on May 8th. Dublin Startup Weekend takes place from May 6th-8th at the NDRC.
The volcanic ash cloud disrupted many of our plans this week. Our first monthly guest speaker John Breslin was one of the 750k travellers stranded throughout the world. We are rescheduling his talk at Hotel Meyrick for 7pm Tuesday, April 27th. Adrian and Ellen at Meetforeal won a presentation slot at eComm America 2010 for their innovative Crowdscanner app but were unable to travel and sent a video in their place. Stefan at Metaio gave an inspiring augmented reality presentation at eComm via a Microvision Pico Projector and paper sheet which everyone is raving about.
Lin Clark overcame the travel restrictions and gave a great remote presentation on Semantic Drupal at DrupalCon SF 2010. For anyone looking to learn more about Drupal places are still available at Drupal Camp Ballyvaughan running May 15th-16th 2010. Open Source Ireland is a new community initiative setup to bring together Open Source groups and enthusiasts based in Ireland. They are running a logo competition with a closing date of April 25th. MAKE Magazine have teamed up with MakerBot Industries to giveaway a CupCap CNC to the lucky winner of its Thingiverse design challenge. Closing date is May 5th for this unique chance to win a 3D printer.
We are delighted to have John Breslin kick off our monthly guest speaker series at Hotel Meyrick 7pm, Tuesday April 20th. John will talk about The Social Semantic Web. His recently co-authored The Social Semantic Web with Stefan Decker and Alexandre Passant furthers the understanding of technologies and research issues involved in applying Semantic Web technologies to social software. Admission is free and all are welcome.
UPDATE 1 : We are rescheduling John’s talk due to Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcanic eruption hindering travel plans for attendees. New details to follow once we have spoken with Christina at Hotel Meyrick and John.
