May 4th Meetup

Thanks to John Breslin for delivering a great talk on The Social Semantic Web last night and to everyone who joined us for the first of our monthly guest speaker series. Given recent announcements from Twitter and Facebook it proved very informative and timely. We found the Semantic Microblogging Framework (SMOB) of particular interest. Our next community meetup is 7pm Tuesday, May 4th at the Galway Bakery Company. Come upstairs to the back section when you arrive and we will order from there.

Declan McGrath has posted a good write up of Open Jam over on The Irish Penguin. There are a number of upcoming events worth sharing. Galway Open Coffee is hosting its May 1st meetup in Irelands first ecovillage Cloughjordan. To celebrate the release of Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx) a geeknic is planned for May 2nd in Farmleigh Park. Week of the Volcanic Ash Cloud

The volcanic ash cloud disrupted many of our plans this week. Our first monthly guest speaker John Breslin was one of the 750k travellers stranded throughout the world. We are rescheduling his talk at Hotel Meyrick for 7pm Tuesday, April 27th. Adrian and Ellen at Meetforeal won a presentation slot at eComm America 2010 for their innovative Crowdscanner app but were unable to travel and sent a video in their place. Stefan at Metaio gave an inspiring augmented reality presentation at eComm via a Microvision Pico Projector and paper sheet which everyone is raving about.

Lin Clark overcame the travel restrictions and gave a great remote presentation on Semantic Drupal at DrupalCon SF 2010. For anyone looking to learn more about Drupal places are still available at Drupal Camp Ballyvaughan running May 15th-16th 2010. Open Source Ireland is a new community initiative setup to bring together Open Source groups and enthusiasts based in Ireland. They are running a logo competition with a closing date of April 25th. MAKE Magazine have teamed up with MakerBot Industries to giveaway a CupCap CNC to the lucky winner of its Thingiverse design challenge. Closing date is May 5th for this unique chance to win a 3D printer.

We are delighted to have John Breslin kick off our monthly guest speaker series at Hotel Meyrick 7pm, Tuesday April 20th. John will talk about The Social Semantic Web. UPDATE 1 : We are rescheduling John’s talk due to Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcanic eruption hindering travel plans for attendees. New details to follow once we have spoken with Christina at Hotel Meyrick and John.

UPDATE 2 : John’s talk will now take place at Hotel Meyrick 7pm Tuesday, April 27th. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Two new streams

Thanks to everyone who made our Community Meetup last night. We discussed a number of potential streams to get up and running within our sandbox. After looking at each proposal we have decided on two new streams to sit alongside our Android stream.

The first is an Arduino stream which our newest member Dara will lead over the coming weeks. It was an easy choice after being inspired by our recently attended Mitch Altman and Jimmie P. Rodgers Electronic Workshop at the Science Gallery hosted by TOG and Robots.ie. The second is a Game Development stream which like the Android stream will be a collective voyage of discovery given interested members are new to the space but keen to learn more.

A third potential stream will need further discussion with Sebastian and members of the Galway LUG before proceeding further. Hopefully they will be able to make our next community meetup 7pm Tuesday, April 13th at the Galway Bakery Company. We now have 4 entries for our new logo design competition. All entries received on or before April 30th will be shared here. If your feeling creative get in contact with your 2 color entry.

091 Labs Logo Competition

If you are interested in starting / participating in one of our new streams come along to out next meetup 7pm Tuesday, April 6th at the Galway Bakery Company. Come upstairs to the back section when you arrive and we will order from there.

We also discussed drafting our constitution and running a competition to design our 091 Labs logo. There are 3 entries already so if you would like to submit a 2 color design for entry before April 30th please get in contact. This years OSSBarcamp takes place on April 17th at IBM,Pembroke House, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. Attendance is free but pre-registration is required here given there is limited space.
