Ignite Galway: Aftermath

ignite_galway-01Thanks to all that attended Ignite Galway #5! We’re all really pleased with how it went: decent turnout, lovely crowd, great atmosphere, and fantastic speakers – what more do you need?

How about the video playlist from it? See below! =D

Thanks to Ciarán Winters for both filming the event and for editing all the videos so quickly!

We had a massive amount of interest from potential speakers and we’re sorry we couldn’t fit everyone in this time around. We also had a few people ask to postpone until the next time so we’re well on our way to a full speaker list for Ignite Galway #6, which is just as well because we just confirmed August 15th with Kelly’s Bar as the date for it! =)

So if you’d be interested in speaking or helping out in some other way, please drop us an email to ignite@091labs.com

A big thanks again to all our speakers:

Brendan, Michael Madden, Frank, and Philip all presented their talks on behalf of the Computer and Communication Museum of Ireland so you should definitely check it out. They’ve an open day on July 13th and everyone is invited.

Ignite Galway: A Fistful of Speakers

ignite_galway-01Here’s more of our speaker list for tomorrow’s Ignite event!

  • The first two that I want to mention are Frank McCurry and Philip Cloherty. They are both serving as board members for the Computer & Communications Museum of Ireland.
    • Philip will be talking on ‘Saving our Technological Heritage from the Dumpster’,
    • and Frank is going to explain the Origins of Radio.
  • Next up is Michael O’Connor from 091 Labs and he’s planning to talk on Transhumanism, Human+, and the Future of our Species.
  • Shane Marks, game developer and free software hacker, is going to let everyone in on the recent and ongoing revival in the Pirate Party of Ireland.
  • Michael Kerrin of HP and Python Galway wants to tell you about CoderDojo and how free, relaxed, and open learning is a great benefit to young people.
  • And Seamus Sheridan of Sheridans Cheesemongers is going to talk Socialism & Food.

So make sure to pop down to Kelly’s tomorrow at 8pm!

Ignite Galway this Thursday evening!

ignite_galway-01Just a quick reminder that Ignite Galway #5 will be occurring this Thursday evening (June 27th) upstairs in Kellys at 8pm. If you’ve made other plans, change them because this will be far better!

What is Ignite?

Ignite is a global format for 5 minute lightning talks where a variety of speakers meet up and each share a story that they hold near and dear in the hope of inspiring the audience with new ideas. To aid them in this goal, they are allowed 20 slides that more forward every 15 seconds. It’s a light-hearted event where the real aim is to have a good time while learning something new.

Why you should attend

This is our biggest Ignite event yet! At least 12 speakers have stepped forward and are confirmed to be talking on a wide range of topics. These include:

  • Oisín Ó Nidh, chairman of the Galway Cycling Campaign, on How to make Galway a Cycling City,
  • Michael Madden, veteran Ignite speaker and Head of Information Technology in NUI, Galway, on Computing Education: Past and Future,
  • Helen Gomez, artistic evangelist and open source enthusiast, on The Meaning of Art,
  • Paul MacEoin, masters student and (mad) scientist in training, on Curing Cancer,
  • Brendan Smith, probably the busiest person in Galway and localised force of nature for community outreach, on the Artifacts of the National Computer and Communication Museum,
  • and a whole load more to be announced later today!
  • Update! http://091labs.com/2013/06/ignite-galway-a-fistful-of-speakers/

What Ignite is in aid of

The entry price of €5 goes towards helping 091 Labs with a particularly hefty ESB bill! Make sure to turn up early because seats are limited!

Ignite Galway #5 – 27/6/13 – calling all potential speakers!

ignite_galway-01Hey there,

We’re planning to run Ignite Galway #5 on Thursday, June 27th from 8pm in Kelly’s but we need a few more speakers to go ahead. Last time, we had to postpone when a few speakers had to cancel last minute. We didn’t have enough backup speakers to really make it a good time for everyone and we don’t want that to happen this time =)

So if you’d be interested in giving a 5 minute talk on a topic that interests you, please email ignite@091labs.com before the end of this Sunday, Jun 16th, and let us know!

Ignite is a global lightning presentation format where speakers have five minutes and twenty timed slides to enlighten and inspire the audience about their chosen topic. Entry is €5 and the enlightenment is free!

The talk can be on whatever topic you want. The only thing we ask is that it be something that inspires you, something that you’d like to share with others.

And don’t to worry about making the most perfect talk ever either, we actually prefer our talks to be a bit rough and ready as the event is itself. The aim is to have fun, have a laugh, have a pint, enjoy the night, and maybe learn something and get inspired too =)

What we need:

  • 5 minutes of you talking on your topic.
  • 20 slides made by you that we can run in the background (they’ll autoforward every 15 seconds).
  • The slides saved in .ppt, .odp, and .pdf because something always goes wonky with presentations!

Steps to making a talk:

  • Figure out the story you want to tell, it can be whatever you want!
  • Write down the 5 main points you want to mention – that’s one minute each.
  • Get 4 pictures for each of those points that’ll help it flow in the background.
  • Turn the photos into slides and add some text if need be.
  • Tweak the above to your personal preferences afterwards.

If you want some ideas as to how they usually go, check out the playlist of our past Ignite talks. Below is one by Eoin Madden about Organ Donation, and Zombies!

Ignite Galway #5 – Wednesday, April 24th at 8pm

ignite_galway-01Sticking to our goal to try to have one every two months for the rest of the year, we’re going to be running the next Ignite Galway session on Wednesday, April 24th, (next week) at 8pm, Upstairs at Kelly’s Bar.

To explain Ignite, I’m just going to steal completely from Oisin’s post for the last one!

Ignite is a global lightning presentation format where speakers have five minutes and twenty timed slides to enlighten and inspire the audience about their chosen topic. Entry is €5 and the enlightenment is free!

We had 7 speakers at our last event in February (I was one of them!) and the rest did a great job =P The videos can be watched here. Over the last two events, we’ve had topics covering archaeology, science, maths, art, political satire, empowering creativity, gender equality, life foods, community involvement, movement building, and saving lives – zombies have also came up twice!

We’re still looking for more speakers for the event if anyone is interested. Here is what we need:

  • 5 minutes of you talking about something that interests you which you want to share with everyone.
  • 20 slides that we can run in the background (they’ll autoforward every 15 seconds).
  • The slides saved in .ppt, .odp, and .pdf because something always goes wonky.

That’s it! It’s really easy to get involved. Here is our advice for making a talk.

  • Figure out the story you want to tell, it can be whatever you want!
  • Write down the 5 main points you want to mention – that’s one minute each.
  • Get 4 pictures for each of those points that’ll help it flow in the background.
  • Turn the photos into slides and add some text if need be.
  • Tweak the above to your preference afterwards.

You don’t need to worry too much about perfection or making an everlasting masterpiece, we actually prefer our talks to be a bit rough and ready as the event itself. The aim is to have fun, have a laugh, have a pint, enjoy the night, and maybe learn something too =) If interested or would like some advice for it, drop me an email at padraic@091labs.com. Either way, I hope to see you all there next week!
