The fine folks at the Galway Home Brewers Club will be having their December meeting (and kicking off their Christmas party) tonight around sevenish. It’ll be a closed-doors event – just members of the Home Brewers Club, and members of the ‘Labs, and there’ll be a few drinkies being had. Around nineish, the party will transfer to a nearby drinking establishment; most likely the Salt House.
Screening of “One Day on Earth”, a collaborative film made in every country on Earth on 10/10/10.
Around the middle of last year, I came across a Kickstarter (or rather was pointed at it by Aaron) that really caught my interest. The idea was that on one day in 2010, specifically 10/10/10, poeple from countries all over the world were asked to film their lives, surroundings and communities with the aim of telling a story of humanity in the start of the 21st century. The story would be a collaborative effort in more than one way. As well as drawing on the many short films, it was to use a now commonplace, but at the time quite novel means of funding. I decided to join the many other Kickstarters and contribute $100 on behalf of 091 Labs. After quite some time, the film was compiled and produced, and eventually, the DVD made its way to Galway.
We will be holding a screening at 091 Labs at 7pm on the 16th of December. All are welcome. All donations to 091 Labs.
The knitting circle will have its next meeting at the labs on Saturday, December 8th from 4 to 7pm. The knitting circle is open to knitters of all skill levels. It provides a social and collaborative workspace, and help is available for people just starting out. Meetings are held on the second Saturday of each month. All attendees are expected to bring their own supplies. Attendance is free for members, and €2 for everyone else. All money goes to the upkeep of the Labs. Any questions can be directed to maraley42 [at] gmail [dot] com.
CrisisCamp Ireland will having their next monthly meetup in 091 Labs on the 8th of December at 2pm.
At the first meetup on November 3rd, we jumped straight into actively helping out with Hurricane Sandy. The attendees were working with other tech-heads from around the world to try to provide as much info to those on the ground as possible. These activities included:
mapping the status of available communications between Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island e.g. telephone outages and wifi hotspots
finding a disaster assessment maps for the different States affected
working with the Department of Education on maps to get kids back to open schools on Monday
working with the Greater New York Hospital Association on updating and mapping the status of the hospitals affected
There’ll be people in for the meetup giving reports on how things have gone since last month and what else was done.
If any of this interests you and you’ll like to learn more or get involved, pop down to the event!
A second Cryptoparty will be happening in 091 Labs on November 30th from 7pm!
Cryptoparties are happening all over the world. These free events are for people who are interested in encryption so they can come and learn more about basic Crypto programs and the concepts behind their operation. You can check out more info on cryptoparty.org.
There’ll be people talking about PGP/GPG, Tor, changing MAC addresses, and a bunch of other things. If you want to help out or have something you’d like to show, let us know and we’ll get some space together!
Tog in Dublin will also be hosting a Cryptoparty on the same night so no matter which half of the country you’re in, you’re covered =)
